Abstract

743,192. Friction clutches. GATES. G. R. G. Aug. 25, 1953 [Nov. 10, 1952]. No. 28289/52. Class 80(2) Metal discs 25 of an oil-immersed multidisc clutch (Fig. 1, not shown), have endless concentric circular grooves spaced at least eight, and preferably ten, per inch, between plane surfaces 34 frictionally engaging interleaved plain discs 24 wholly of hard friction material, such as treated woven asbestos. The grooves, which form oil reservoirs, are in registry on opposite sides and are trapezoidal with 60 degree sides, being moulded in a plate of sintered metal such as iron ,the faces of which are subsequently ground, or being turned in a cast iron plate.
