Abstract
742,780. Heat insulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 30, 1953 [Dec. 30, 1952], No. 36239/53. Class 64(2). In making a vacuum insulated cabinet, the outer casing 1 or 24 is either so lined with heatinsulating material 5, as in Fig. 2, or is so formed, as in Fig. 6, that it encloses a cavity the boundary surface of which is inclined inwardly and downwardly. In the former case, Fig. 2, a liner 2, of similar shape to but larger lateral dimensions than the cavity, is inserted into the latter. The insulating material is compressed either by forcing the liner into the cavity with the aid of a solid or inflatable plug 15 or by forcing the plug several times into the cavity before the liner is inserted. Guide members, such as thin metal strips 13 or two metal sheets arranged cruciform to cover the bottom and sides of the cavity, or a metal shell slit at the corners, are provided on the surface of the insulating material. In the second case, Fig. 6, the insulating material 25 is attached to the liner 2, and may be compressed before insertion into the casing 24, by the inflation of a doublewalled receptacle of similar shape. The insulating material may comprise glass fibres. The edges of the casing and liner are sealed together and the space between evacuated. Specification 715,174 is referred to.
