Abstract

742,644. Cutting ice cream into blocks. LYONS & CO., Ltd., J., and WHITE, P. April 13, 1953 [Jan. 11, 1952], No. 905/52. Class 87 (2). A ribbon of ice cream is formed in a chilled condition on a moving conveyer, the ribbon is severed on the conveyer into blocks by reciprocable cutting means, and the blocks are then frozen whilst on the conveyer. Ribbons of ice cream are extruded from nozzles 10 onto an endless stainless steel conveyer band 15 and pass under a vertically-reciprocating electricallyheated knife 33 which advances with the ribbons whilst it cuts them into blocks and retracts. The blocks pass on the conveyer through a freezing tunnel, and are then enrobed with chocolate or otherwise treated, wrapped and packed. When the blocks have been removed from the conveyer band the band is cleaned in its transit back to the extrusion point. The knife 33 is carried by a lever 32 fulcrummed on a shaft 38 journalled in a carriage 17 having roller bearings 20 which run upon a stationary track 22. The carriage is reciprocated by a rotating cam 30 acting through lever 26 and link 27. The knife-carrying lever 32 is rocked about 38 by a sprocket on cam 30 via chain 40, another sprocket, crank disc 44 and connecting rod 46. The vertical movement of the knife is adjustable by means of a turnbuckle and the angular position of crank disc 44 may be adjusted relative to its shaft 39.
