Abstract

The invention comprises an 11a -oxygenated-3,17-dihydroxypregnan-20-one of the formula <FORM:0740987/IV(a)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or the acyl residue of an organic carboxylic acid, especially of such an acid containing from one to eight carbon atoms, inclusive, and the preparation thereof by treating with a saponifying agent a 17(20)-oxido - 3,11a ,20 - triacyloxypregnane in solution in an organic solvent which is non-reactive under the conditions of reaction, e.g. methanol, ethanol, acetone, dioxane, benzene or toluene. As saponifying agent there may be used sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium or potassium carbonate or sodium or potassium bicarbonate or other basic saponifying agent. Examples disclose the preparation of 11a -acetoxy- and 11a - propionoxy - 3a ,17 - dihydroxypregnan - 20 - one, 11a - acetoxy - 3b ,17 - dihydroxypregnan-20-one, and 3a and 3b ,11a ,17-trihydroxypregnan - 20 - one. Other 11a - acyloxy - 3a (or b ), 17 - dihydroxypregnan - 20 -ones are mentioned. Specification 739,175 is referred to.
