Abstract
740,927. Stereoscopic camera system. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 21,1954 [May 29, 1953], No. 14989/53. Classes 97 (1) and 98 (2). A stereoscopic camera system comprises a semi-reflecting mirror inclined to the horizontal plane, a first camera arranged behind the mirror to receive transmitted light, a second camera arranged to receive light reflected from the front surface of the mirror, and means for adjusting one or both of the cameras along a path substantially parallel to the horizontal geometrical axis of the mirror to alter the interaxial distance between the cameras. Typically the mirror 1 is inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal and the first camera 3 is arranged behind it with its axis horizontal while the second camera 4 may be disposed above the mirror with its axis vertical, the camera 3 being displaceable parallel to the axis Z of the mirror along parallel guides 5 by means of a screw 6. Preferably the second camera is arranged above the first camera with its axis horizontal and the reflected light directed towards it by a further mirror parallel to the mirror 1. To adjust the convergence of the camera axes, the mirror 1 may be adjustable about a vertical axis 9 by a micrometer screw 10. In a modification in which the interaxial distance is such that the cones of light to the cameras do not overlap on the mirror, this may be replaced by a mirror having a totally reflecting portion for the second camera and the portion for the first camera may be transparent or omitted. The whole camera system may be mounted in a single housing. U.S.A. Specification 2,630,737 is referred to.
