Abstract
1,158,131. Attenuated total reflection spectrometry. GENERAL INSTRUMENTS CO. Ltd. Oct. 17, 1966 [Nov. 22, 1965], No.49438/65. Heading G2J. A block 18 having two parallel plane side surfaces 23, 24, for optical contact with a sample and plane end surfaces 25, 26, is associated with a pair of mirrors 4, 11, the arrangement being such that a ray of light 28 which strikes mirror 4 and which would, in the absence of the apparatus pass through the position occupied by surface 26 substantially normally thereto, is reflected by mirrors 4, 11 to pass normally through surface 25, undergoes total internal reflection at surfaces 23, 24 and emerges from surface 26 along the path it would have followed in the absence of the apparatus. The block 18 may be held in a holder to which a liquid sample is supplied or a solid sample may be clamped against one or both of the surfaces 23, 24. The block 18 may be adjustably mounted, mirrors 4, 11 may be rotatable about axes parallel to the edge between surfaces 24 and 25, and mirror 4 may also be adjustable about a perpendicular axis.
