Abstract

1,080,114. Optical apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept. 11, 1963], No. 2385/67. Divided out of 1, 080, 112. Heading G2J. An arrangement for an attenuated total reflection spectrometer comprises a radiation source and an element 23, Fig. 2, having parallel planar boundary surfaces spaced apart by a distance which is small compared with their length and having a refractive index higher than the surroundings of the boundary surfaces, the source being arranged to direct radiation on to the first end 22 of the element 23 so as to be reflected back and forth between the boundary surfaces, reflected at the other end, and finally emerge through the first end 22. As shown the end 22 is semicylindrical and the element is mounted to pivot about the axis 24 of the cylinder so that the source may direct rays such as 26, 27, into the element at different angles and thus vary the number of reflections. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the entrance face is formed by two quarter cylinders (30), (31), in optical contact with one end of the boundary surfaces (32), (33). In other forms the entrance and exist surfaces are plane to form a V-shaped end.
