1,080,112. Optical apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept. 11, 1963], No. 36739/64. Heading G2J. Apparatus for use in the attenuated total reflectance method of spectroscopy comprises a V-shaped element 1, with parallel entrance, 2 and exit, 5 faces spaced a distance d apart, the angle 2 # between the arms of the V being twice the angle of incidence 6 of the radiation on the boundary surfaces 3, 4, # being greater than the critical angle and being such that the length of path of the radiation through the element 1 is substantially equal to n d where n is the refractive index of the material of the element 1. Under such conditions defocusing does not occur and the emergent beam 12 is focused at the same point as it would have been if beam 11 were not passed through the element 1. Liquid 8 may be fed through spout 7 into a container 6 surrounding the element 1.
