Abstract
740,497. Batteries. LUCAS, O. D. July 28, 1954 [July 28, 1953; Oct. 7, 1953], Nos. 20900/53 and 27509/53. Class 53. An inert primary cell comprises electrodes of magnesium and copper and an electrolyte of cupric chloride which may be in the solid state, fresh or sea water being added when the cell is to be activated for use, or alternatively a solution of cupric chloride may be contained in a vessel communicating with the cell. When present in the solid state the cupric chloride may be mixed with hydrochloric acid to form a paste which is applied to copper gauze plates forming positive electrodes which are interleaved with the magnesium negative plates. The plates may be retained in grooves in the container or they may be separated by layers of absorbent paper or by a winding of string. Several cells may be enclosed in a container and spaced apart by partitions having spaces round them for the entrance of water. The container may be enclosed in an evacuated receptacle having an inlet for water.
