Abstract
759,584. Batteries. SOC. DE LA PILE LECLANCHE. March 21, 1952 [March 23, 1951], No. 7418/52. Class 53. A battery consisting of a pile of dry or inert cells depolarized by atmospheric oxygen is provided with zinc or other negative electrodes 3 some or all of which project beyond the activated carbon electrodes 1 to form spaces 8 to which air has access through holes in the outer casing. The pile is enclosed in waterproof insulating material 6 with which the electrodes 3 engage. The electrodes 3 overlap the electrodes 1 on one or more sides and the electrodes 1 may be provided with ventilation channels 4 as shown in Fig. 7. The electrodes 1, 3 are stuck together through the medium of a conductive impervious coating 2 and the electrodes of individual cells may be separated by porous sheets or by rods 10. The casing of the pile is provided with openings for the entry of air and the introduction of electrolyte in the case of inert cells. These openings are covered by strips of semi-permeable material which are removed when the battery is to be put into use. If the battery is not of the inert type the strips prevent evaporation of electrolyte. In a modification each zinc plate is provided with a positive electrode on each side and some of the cells are connected in parallel. The battery may include cells having depolarizers of manganese dioxide or cuprous chloride and negative electrodes of magnesium.
