Abstract

1488737 Electric battery lamps; emergency beacons YARDNEY ELECTRIC CORP 9 Sept 1975 [18 Sept 1974] 37131/75 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] An emergency sea beacon comprises an outer shell 22 containing an air flotation chamber 36, a water ballast chamber 38 having a water inlet 66, at least one electrochemical cell 32 activatable by water, and a light source 80 connected electrically to the cell. The light source is enclosed by a transparent dome 30. The cells 32 are disposed in a stack 34 and each cell comprises a pair of electrically insulating frames 54 covered with a gas-permeable, water-impermeable film or cloth 56, a sheet 58 of cathode material such as carbon, tungsten-bronze, silver or platinum, an anode plate 60 of magnesium, aluminium or zinc, and a separator sheet 62 of modified cellulose. Adjacent cells are separated by an insulating grid 61 of nylon or like plastics material, and passageways 63 extending between the cells expose the cathodes 58 to the air in chamber 36, which communicates with the exterior through one or more gas-permeable, water-impermeable membranes 37. The chamber 38 comprises a reservoir 40 having a gas outlet 46, electrolyte spaces (65) in each cell in which separators 62 and anodes 60 are disposed, openings 48 between the reservoir and the spacers, and openings 66 in the bottom of the shell 22 communicating with holes 64 in the bottom of each cell. The reservoir contains an absorbent pad 70 which retains a finely divided solid particulate water-soluble electrolyte such as sodium chloride so that when the beacon is tossed into water in an emergency the chamber 38 floods with electrolyte and actuates the cells 32 thereby energizing the light source. Lead weights 72 may be provided to assist in keeping the beacon upright.
