Abstract

740,028. Davits. LEFFLER, U. E. Feb. 11, 1954 [Oct. 21, 1953], No. 4063/54. Class 115. [Also in Group XXX] A hoisting apparatus for ships or trucks adapted to prevent the load striking the edge of the deck &c., comprises a load suspension member 9 displaceable along a boom 1 and connected thereto by a gearing or linkage in such manner that the luffing movement of the boom varies the longitudinal position of the suspension member on the boom and the distance between the point of suspension of the load and the tilting axis of the boom. A pair of booms 1, mounted on a pivot-shaft 2 carrying a pinion 4 at each end, are tilted by a pair of hydraulic cylinders 14 pivoted to the chassis and to the booms. The gear 4 meshes with a gear 5 mounted on the chassis. Integral with the gear 5 is a lever 6 pivoted to a lever 7 pivoted to a load suspension member 9 slidable along the boom 1. As the boom is tilted the gear 4 rotates the gear 5, thus raising the member 9 and with it the load 11 and swinging it beyond the edge of the deck. In a modification the levers 6, 7 have slots and a bolt secures them together. In another modification a gear is interposed between gears 4 and 5 so that the gears rotate in the same direction. In a further modification the gears are replaced by sprockets and chains; or twin drums may be used, a cable being wound on one drum so that it unwinds from another. Alternatively as shown in Fig. 15 a lever 4e<SP>1</SP> is pivoted to the boom 1 and to one end 5e<SP>1</SP> of a two-armed lever pivoted at 32. The other arm of the lever is bolted to the lever 7. As a modification the boom is connected to the end 5e<SP>1</SP> of the link by a link having a bolt sliding in a slot in the end of the link. A tie-rod connects the boom and link.
