Abstract
1,183,190. Safe-load indicators for cranes with telesopic jibs. B. & A. ENG. CO. Ltd. 12 Aug.. 1968 [15 Aug., 1967], No. 37555/67. Heading B8B. A crane radius indicator device or a crane safe-load indicator radius compensating device for a crane having an extensible jib comprises, as shown in Fig. 2, a stationary casing 1 secured to the crane superstructure A adjacent the jib pivot axis 2. An indicator member 3, mounted on parallel links 4, 5 pivoted to the casing 1, is movable along a support formed by a drive screw 11 driven through bevel gears 12, 14 actuated by a spring drum 10 rotated by a cable 9 attached to the jib peak. A follower in the form of a trunnion nut 15 is thus moved along the screw 11 in proportion to the effective length of the jib. The screw 11 is arranged radially in relation to the jib pivot axis 2 and pivots about that axis. The nut 15 runs in a vertical slot 8 in the indicator member, and the horizontal distance of the slot 8 relative to the axis 2 is proportional to the operating radius of the crane (considered as the product of the effective length of the jib and the cosine of the jib angle). The slot 8 has an additional terminal portion 18 which is not aligned with the main portion, so that when the jib as fully raised the indicated radius exceeds the true radius because the limiting factor is not the overturning moment of the load, but the strength of the jib. The indicator member 3 is linked with an indicator pointer (not shown) through lever 16, forming an extension of parallel link 5. The lever may additionally, or alternatively, be linked with a safeload indicator such as that described in Specification 723,070 so as to compensate it for change of crane operating radius. In the alternative construction shown in Fig. 4, support screw 11<SP>1</SP> and the ,indicator member 3<SP>1</SP> are mounted in a common casing for support by the jib. Lever 18<SP>1</SP> is connected by a link to form a parallel motion linkage with a similar lever (not shown) coaxial with the jib pivot so that lever 18<SP>1</SP> remains at a fixed inclination to the ground as the jib luffs. Luffing of the jib thus causes a tilting movement of the screw 11<SP>1</SP> in relation to casing 1<SP>1</SP> and there is produced a relative movement between screw 11<SP>1</SP> and indicator member 3<SP>1</SP> corresponding to that between screw 11 and indicator member 3 as described above.
