. Claims.
My=present invention relates generally to improvements in automotive or industrial trucks of the vertically swingingcrane type having a hoist-'- line and horizontally pivoted'carrienand more specincallyto a manuallycontrolled and power operated lifting mechanism for crane trucks. in the nature of a unitary assembly or equipment use with the truck in lifting andtransporting'certain types of loads.
While the lifting mechanism of my invention 153W? adapted for use in various ways, it is especiallydesigned for facilehandling of cylindricaldrums, or other liquid containers, insuch manner as to eliminate the ,pQSsibilityof spillage or waste of the contained liquid.
The primary objectv ofthe invention is to equip acrane truck of conventional type with a lifting or pick -up mechanism that is simple in construction and convenient in operation and control for eflectiveand efiicient use lifting, carrying or transporting; and depositing, aload or container of this nature. I
- The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as well hereinafter be more fully set forth. In theaccompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete v. invention wherein theparts are arranged according to one ciples" of my invention, that various changes and alterations in these xemplifying drawings and mechanical structures, within the scope of my, appended the principles of claims, without" departing from side elevation of the crane parts in hori 'portation; and
Figure is an enlarged detailed sectional view approximately on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
In order that the general arrangement and relation of parts may readily be understood I have illustrated a conventional truck or this type I mode [have so far devised forthe practical application oithe prinbut it will .be understood may be made.
having upwardly converging uprights I, l and an inclined crane 2 forming the main frame which is rigidly united with the usual chassis 3 of the automotive truck. 1 I
The hoist-line I from the hoisting drum 5' passes over and around sheaves 6 and I of the crane, and a motor 8 is mounted on :the chassis, with transmission gearing 9; .S'for operating the hoisting drum. Customary or suitable control means (not shown) are provided for controlling the driving and transmission means-between .the motor and the hoisting drum, and these manual control means are arranged in position for ready access of the operator who stands'upon the deck of'thetruck; The lifting and carrying mechanism of my invention includes a vertically swinging boom l0, which is made up of two forwardly converging and rigidly connected metal channel plates, and the-boom is pivoted at its rear. end upon a horizontal transversely extending rock-shaft H mounted in the plates or the uprights of the fixed crane.
At its free front end the boom isprovided with a carrier that includes a throat or U-shaped yoke ii that is rigidly united in suitable manner with the spaced plates 1 Or arms of the boom: :The semi-circular or bowed portion of the :yoke merges with two spaced parallel and straight armsof the yoke, and slots l3, l3 are provided in the yoke extending outwardl from the bow of the yoke and terminating in openings atv the front free ends of the yoke. I The yoke forms part of the load carrier, and it supports and guides a pair of opposed, arcuate or segmental clamping jaws l4, yll', mounted within the slotted yoke and'movable forwardly to closed or clamping position on the straight arrns of the yoke, and movable rearwardly to retracted or open position withlnthe bowed portion of the yoke.
v For this purpose with a centrally trunnion 15 which of the yoke and' is provided; with anti-friction guiding. and sliding collars I B- forco-action with the slotted' yoke. I
each clamping jaw is equipped located; outwardly radiating- In the retracted or open position of the jaws in passes through-aguide slot-13" I fixed support for ready access to the operator of article to be lifted, and manually controlled the hoist, and this lever is pivotally connected by means for operating the jaws.
