Abstract
739,304. Electric furnaces. APPLIED HEAT CO., Ltd. Aug. 11, 1954 [Aug. 11, 1953], No. 22171/53. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XII] An electrically heated bell-type furnace for firing ceramics comprises a stationary base for the ware, and a two-part cover, the sections of which can be separated or joined together by relative movement in a substantially horizontal plane. The half-covers A, A1 are made of steel lined with refractory material, are fitted with electric heating elements 1 and run on rails 11 and 13 mounted on bogies 9 and 10 respectively. The base B<SP>2</SP> comprises a refractory block on the sides of which are fixed guide rails 3 forming a continuation of the rails 11 and 13, and further electric heating elements 1 are disposed in the top surface of the base. On completion of the firing, the half-covers A, A<SP>1</SP> are separated slowly so that cooling of the ware is gradual, and the hot half-covers may then be disposed over another loaded base to preheat the ware gently. The half-covers may be associated with three bases, Fig. 1 (not shown), worked in series, so that one stack of ware is being dismantled or rebuilt, another is being fired, and the third is cooling. The bogies 9 and 10 are moved from one base to another on the rails 5 and 7 respectively. The half-covers may be dome-shaped, used with circular bases.
