Abstract

739,269. Mine-roof supports. MINING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Aug. 11, 1953 [Sept. 5, 1952], No. 22433/52. Class 20 (2). An hydraulic unit for use with a chock or pit-prop comprises one or more cylinders 6 each having a ram 7 flanged at 8 so as to seat on its cylinder in the lowermost position of the ram, each cylinder communicating by way of a manually-controlled valve 16, Fig. 2, with an accumulator 9, having a ram 10 loaded by compressed air admitted through a connection 12. The accumulator is charged to maximum load by the yielding of the rams under roof load, the hydraulic liquid being displaced from the cylinders into the accumulator by way of a non-return valve 17, while the manually-controlled valve 16 is shut. The stored energy in the accumulator is used to lift the chock into contact with the roof, in a new position, by opening the valve 16.
