Abstract

739,241. Electric water heaters. MAK MASCHINENBAU KIEL AKT.-GES. Jan. 18, 1954, No. 1438/54. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XIII] A heating system (see Group XIII) includes an electrode heating boiler 4 to which water is returned after separation of steam for heating purposes, the heat supply, to the boiler being regulated in accordance with the temperature of the steam condensate being returned thereto from the heating system. The boiler shown is arranged for connecting up to three voltages. The electrodes are housed in tubes of non- conducting material. The negative electrodes 23, 42, 47 which are movable in accordance with the heating effect required, are connected to a bar 21 and co-operate with positive electrodes 24, 31, 39 which are carried by chambers through which the water to be heated passes in flowing through the tube system from an inlet 7 to an outlet 8. The operation is as follows : at the lowest of the three voltages (e.g. 1000 volts), the current flows from electrodes 24 to 23 (arrows 26), thence through rods 25 and wire 43 to earth 28 by way of relay switch 27. When a higher voltage (e.g. 1500 volts) is switched on, the switch 27 is actuated to cut out the earth 28 from the former circuit and the current now flows by way of electrodes 24, 23, rods 25, 51, electrodes 42, 39 and 31 (arrows 46) to earth by way of wires 44 and relay switch 45. When the highest voltage (e.g. 3000 volts) is brought into operation, both relay switches 27, 45 are opened and the current then flows by way of electrodes 24, 23, rods 25, 51, electrodes 42, 31 and 39, 47 (arrows 50) and thence along bars 52 to wire 49 and earth 28.
