The frame of an endless, pick-armed chaincarrying jib 15 of a coal-cutting machine has one or more portions 22 extending laterally of, at right angles to, and intermediate of the length of the frame, and the chain track bends away from the rear edge 16 of the frame, passes around each portion 22 and returns by an appropriate twist 25, 26 on to the rear edge 27 of the frame. A further laterally-extending portion may be provided at the end of the jib. The chain is of the type which is capable of universal movement at the joints and of twisting about its own axis.
