Abstract
737,883. Cathode materials and processing. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. June 1, 1953 [June 5, 1952], No. 14220/52. Class 39 (1). A thermionic valve comprises a cathode, at least a control grid and an anode contained in an evacuated envelope wherein the cathode comprises a metal core, containing impurities, coated with a double or triple oxide coating, which cathode has been prepared by carrying out the steps of preparing a mixture containing a double or triple alkaline earth carbonate and a finelydivided powdered metal or metals from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, iridium, osmium, palladium, ruthenium, or alloys thereof, coating the metal core with the mixture, and forming the cathode by heating the mixture to decompose the alkaline earth carbonate to the oxide, the quantity of metal from the said group in the coating being from 10 atom per cent to 90 atom per cent. Preferably the powdered metal is nickel having a particle size of less than 10 microns. The powdered metal is intimately mixed with the alkaline earth carbonate in a binder in a suitable solvent-examples are described-and the mixture applied to the cathode core by drag-coating, catophoretic coating or spray-coating.
