Abstract

737,802. Centrifugal fans. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 2, 1952 [Dec. 7, 1951], No. 30540/52. Class 110 (1). In a centrifugal fan in which the fan is mounted on the shaft of the electric driving motor, air drawn through the motor is fed to a fan inlet closely adjacent the motor and a shaft bearing, and a mounting for the bearing extends into the fan inlet opening with the bearing partially nested in the fan inlet, air entering the opening being directed towards the bearing. In the fan unit shown, which forms part of a suction cleaner, air enters through intake openings 10 in the motor housing 3 and passes through holes 30 in a plate 25 to the eye of the first stage impeller 33. A bearing 18, which is supported in a cup 27, is cooled by the incoming air, which is deflected towards it by a baffle 31. Preferably, the cup 27 is integral with the plate 25. The air outlet openings 17 may be formed in the end wall 16 of the fan housing 11 instead of in the side wall 15. A nut 38 and washer 37 for securing the impellers on the shaft may be recessed into the impeller 34 as shown. A flange 12 of the motor housing 3 carries the fan housing 11 and may be extended to a larger diameter to facilitate mounting of the unit.
