Abstract

737,689. Gas-discharge switches &c. in wave-guides. FERRANTI, Ltd. Jan. 27, 1954 [Jan. 27, 1953], No.2280/53. Class 40 (8). A gas-filled electric discharge device, e.g. a T.R. switch or gas attenuator, comprises a waveguide section 10, forming a gas cell, surrounded by an annular gas reservoir 19. The section 10 is of length #/4 and is sealed at either end by resonant diaphragms 13, 14 which may be of the type described in Specification 706,810. The outer wall 15 of the reservoir 19, which may be of any convenient shape, is located between connecting flanges 11, 12 by means of plates 16, 18 which are spot-welded to the flanges 11, 12 before assembly. The guide section 10 and the outer wall 15 are brazed to the flanges 11, 12, the joint between the walls of the guide and the flanges being effected by solder which flows under surface tension through the space between each end flange and its locating plate 16 or 18. The diaphragms 13, 14 are brazed in position with a solder of lower melting- point than that used in the rest of the construction. The cell 10 communicates with the reservoir 19 through a small hole 20. An exhaust tube 21 is provided. A modification (Fig. 3, not shown) is described in which two discharge cells are mounted side-by-side and have a common annular gas reservoir.
