737,647. Rolling. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG. Nov. 30,1953 [Nov. 29, 1952], No. 33245/53. Class 83 (4). Regulating means for a rolling mill comprises hydraulic or pneumatic jacks or pressureboxes 22, Fig. 1, under the screw-downs 25 and supplied with pressure medium, the outlets being connected to adjustable outlet valves 21 through which the flow is controlled by the relative movement between the rolls. Each valve 21 may be controlled by a lever 18 mounted on a fulcrum 19 attached to the upper roll bearing 11 and tilted by the relative movement of a pushrod 15 connected to the lower roll bearing 12. The position of the fulcrum 19 is adjustable by means of a screw 20 and the length of the rod 15 adjustable by a threaded sleeve 17. The rod 15 is preferably made of a material having the same coefficient of expansion as the material of the rolls and may be a tube supplied with a heating medium &c. to compensate for temperature effects. In operation, as the distance between the rolls increases, the rod 15 is lowered relatively to the lever 18 and the valve 21 is thereby throttled, causing an increase in pressure on the pressure-box 22 which reduces the distance between the rolls. In a modification the outlets from pressure-boxes under the screw downs of a rolling mill having cambered rolls is controlled by levers in sliding or rolling engagement with points on the rolls opposite the area of contact with the work. In both examples the levers may actuate pass-indicating devices and a servo device may be incorporated to obtain an advantageous speed/time curve and prevent " hunting."
