Abstract

737,461. Ornamenting. PRIESTLEY, C. H., and MURRAY, G. L. March, 16 1953 [March 22, 1952], No. 7437/52. Class 93. [Also in Group XVI] A process for printing on or ornamenting articles of cupped or other non-planar shape comprises the steps of preparing a stencil screen from the design or other matter to be printed on the article, printing through the stencil onto a substantially flat plate, bringing a resilient pad into contact with the flat plate to extract the design therefrom and then pressing the resilient pad against the article to transfer the design thereto. The frame supporting the stencil screen may be hingedly supported in relation to the flat plate so that the design is printed in the same position each time. The pad 18, Fig. 2, is brought down onto the flat plate 12 as shown, spreading radially as it is pressed into contact. The pad may be parabolic in shape for printing on cupped and similar shaped articles but other shapes of pads may be used where more suitable to the shape of the article to be printed upon which may be e.g. of plastics, glass, ceramics, papier-mÔchÚ or the like. The pad may be composed of organic or mineral jellies, e.g. gelatine or gelatine based material. The resilient part of the pad may be secured to a plate 21 connected to a rod 22 whereby vertical movement is effected, Fig. 3, shows the printing of a glass bowl 19 having a dome 20 at the bottom, the pad distorting so as to conform to the shape of the article and transferring the design thereto. The article is located by members 25 on a base 24. The base may be extended to support those parts of the article against which pressure is exerted. The different parts involved in,this process may be arranged on a single base and arranged for example so that the plate 12 is first displaced under the screen and printed, then under the vertically movable pad and the design transferred thereto. The plate 12 is then returned to the initial position and the base 24 carrying the article 19 is moved under the pad for printing as described.
