737,352. Cable winding drums. LE BUS, F. L. Aug. 31, 1953, No. 24048/53. Class 78 (5). A cable winding drum 18 is provided with end brake flanges 22, 24, grooves 30 having a space 32 between their ends, an end filter 46 at one end of the space, the inner face being curved to guide the cable to the beginning of the adjacent groove, and at the other end of the space a rise and filler 38 with a diminishing groove to receive the last wind of the first layer of cable and raise the cable to start the second layer. The brake flange 24 has an aperture 26 and two chocks 28 for the end of the cable 60. The filler 46 has an aperture 49 for the cable to pass to the aperture 26 to be secured by an end clamp 62 and the filler 38 has its wider end grooved to abut and coincide with the end groove 30 on the drum. Kickers 54, 56 are provided on the flanges in line with the ends of the part 32. The edges of the kickers are chamfered and the ends of the grooves 30 at the part 32 are sloped to enable the cable to be wound smoothly on the drum in a helical path as the drum is rotated. At the end of the second wind the end kicker 54 effects the reverse movement, and at the end of the third wind the kicker 56 is effective to reverse the direction. The winding proceeds in a helical path, the cable being laid in the grooves formed by the previous wind. In an alternative construction the grooves are continuous on the surface, as shown in Fig. 17. The grooves are formed by two identical arcuate grooved members 85 secured to the drum and by a curved member 86. The members 85, 86 have slotted ends and chamfered lower edges for securing to the drum. End fillers 95 and 101 are secured to the drum. The filler 95 is a tapered member fitting against the brake flange 83. The rise filler 101 has a groove 107 at one end; it has an inner curved surface and a raised part 109. A pair of kickers are provided on each brake flange, the kickers having a curved surface.
