Abstract

1,118,097. Grooved barrel. F. L. LEBUS. 7 July, 1966 [10 Feb., 1966], No. 30442/66. Heading B8M. A cable spooling drum for receiving successive layers of cable wound substantially helically thereon comprises (a) at least one parallel area which extends around only a part of the drum's circumference but substantially entirely along its cable receiving length and which is formed with a succession of cable receiving grooves, the centre lines of which lie in planes normal to the drum's axis and (b) a further recessed area circumferentially contiguous with the parallel area(s). The further recessed area provides a pitch zone for the cable wherein the cable has helically wound portions, each being a continuation of an arcuate portion of cable contained in a groove in the preceding parallel area. The helix direction in each layer will be opposite to that in the next layer. The further recessed area leaves the cable in the pitch zone suspended above the spool and thus provides a soft, cross-over area for succeeding cable layers and reduces the crushing pressure on the inner layers at these cross-over areas. In Figs. 1 and 2, not shown, the two further areas are a succession of circumferentially extending cable receiving grooves (22) and (24) recessed below the level of the parallel areas (18), (20). In Figs. 3 and 4, not shown, the two parallel areas are formed by two parallel grooved sleeve sections mounted on, and partially covering, the core of the drum, the gaps between the sections forming the further recessed areas.
