Abstract
737,216. Fire hoses. HUBENET, W. M. April 29, 1953 [April 29, 1952], No. 11840/53: Class 99 (2). A tube of rayon fabric which may contain up to 50 per cent of other fibres, e.g. nylon or perlon, and be woven with a satin weave, has a lining and a covering of water-resistant thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl butyral, and the wall of the hose is sufficiently flexible to enable the hose to be coiled up in a flat condition. The hose may be made by (a) drawing the rayon tube through a bath containing a solution or emulsion of a polymer and subsequently bonding the polymer with the tube by the application of heat and after the inner and outer walls have been smoothed off, (b) inserting a tube of polyvinyl chloride into a previously impregnated rayon tube, drawing over the latter a tube of polyvinyl chloride and internally subjecting the composite tube to the pressure of a heated medium to bond the layers of the hose together; alternatively, the rayon tube is provided with a coating of polymer prior to the application of the lining, and the lining is coated with liquid polyvinyl chloride, (c) drawing a rayon tube over a core carrying a lining of polymer, and applying a sheet of polyvinyl polymer over the tube by means of rollers, that sheet being bonded with the tube under heat and pressure. During the lining and covering processes the hose may be drawn through a heated chamber, or infra-red radiation or high-frequency electric heating can be applied. To prevent the ingress of water into the body of the hose, the ends of the rayon tube may be covered with an extra layer of polymer, or the ends of the hose may be turned back and then covered with a polymer.
