Abstract

737,137. Artificial leather &c. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. May 26, 1953 [July 29, 1952], No. 14621/53. Class 96. Artificial leather &c. consists of felted " structural " fibres (i.e. those retained in the material) bound by a soft elastomer and has pores shaped like fibres, which are made by dissolving out fibres which have been felted together with the structural fibres. The weight ratio of structural fibres to binder is from 1 : 2 to 2 : 1 and the pores constitute 40 to 70 per cent of the volume of the artificial leather. The structural fibres or filaments may be of cotton, wool, glass, nylen, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile polymers, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl acetal or regenerated cellulose; preferably a synthetic linear polyamide such as polyhexamethylene sebacamide or adipamide, polycaproamide or an interpolyamide is used. The binder may be N-methoxymethyl polyhexamethylene adipamide, copolyesters made from ethylene glycol, terephthalic acid and sebacic acid, polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl copolymers or acetals, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymers, natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. neoprene. The artificial leather &c. may be embossed before solvent extraction of the pore-forming fibres, which may be of cellulose acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, or potassium polymetaphosphate and may be 0.01 to 0.5 inches long. The structural fibres may be 0.01 to 8.0 inches long. The material may be laminated and may be surfaced by a film of the binder.
