Abstract

1,129,045. Coated fabrics. KURASHIKI RAYON K.K. 25 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 33438/66. Heading B2E. [Also in Division Dl] A non-woven leather-like fabric is made by initially setting a random fibrous web with a binder, impregnating and/or coating the set web with an elastomeric polymer solution, coagulating the polymer by treatment with a liquid which is miscible with polymer solvent but which is non-solvent for the polymer, then extracting the initial binder with a solvent which is a non-solvent for fibres and the polymer. The fibres can be needle punched to form the web. The set mat can be pressed, e.g. with rollers at 120‹C. and buffed before impregnating. The web may be impregnated by squeezing in a solution of the polymer. The web can be impregnated and/or coated with two amounts of polymer. The fibres can be made of polyamides, e.g. drawn and crimped nylon-6 fibres, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, fibres made by spinning a mixture of these polymers, graft fibres, natural fibres or a mixture thereof. The polymer can be a polyurefhane elastomer e.g. the reaction product of polyethylene-polypropylene - adipate-glycol, p, p' diphenylmethane diisocyanate and ethylene glycol, N-methoxymethyl-polyamide, acrylonitrile - butadiene, copolymer, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or natural or synthetic rubber. The polymer can be dissolved in dimethylformamide together with sorbitan monostearate and stearyl alcohol to form the impregnating solution. The binder can be polyvinyl alcohol, watersoluble starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, partially saponified acrylates, polyacrylamide, cellulose acetate, polyvinylacetate or polyvinyl chloride. The binder can be removed with water at 80‹C or methanol. The impregnated web can be coloured, softened, embossed and coated with a polymer.
