Abstract

The charging of a battery by a regulated generator is controlled by a pressure-responsive device sensitive to the rate of gas evolution in the battery which, through a pilot device governing the operation of an electromagnetic regulator, or the like, influences the regulation of the generator in such a manner that charging current is reduced in response to attainment of a predetermined rate of gassing. The pilot device may be a carbon pile resistance acted upon by the pressure-responsive device and shunting a portion of the usual swamp resistor in series with the operating coil of a carbon pile regulator controlling the shunt field excitation of the generator. Alternatively, the pilot device may be a switch operated by the pressureresponsive device and acting directly, or through an intermediate relay, to cut out resistance in series with the operating coil of a voltage regulator. Holding means may be provided for maintaining the pilot device in its operated condition when the rate of gassing subsequently falls.
