Abstract

1448720 Charging accumulators VARTA BATTERIE AG 2 Nov 1973 [4 Nov 1972] 51019/73 Heading H1B A method of charging a multi cell accumulator comprises measuring the rate at which gas evolves from the cells of the accumulator using a temperature sensitive resistor 3 in a duct 1 through which the gas flows, a signal from the device controlling the charging of the accumulator to ensure that the rate of gas evolution is maintained constant. The temperature sensitive resistor is connected in a bridge circuit 16-18 supplied by a voltage stabilizer 20. The gas evolved during charging of the accumulator flows along the duct 1 thereby cooling the resisror 3 and unbalancing the bridge so that the voltage Ua at the output terminals 21 of the bridge is a measure of the rate of gas flow. The voltage Ua is fed to control equipment for a charging set to control the charging current or voltage. In a modification temperature compensation is provided by replacing the resistor 17 by a further temperature sensitive resistor.
