Air is allowed to escape from a conveying system at a controlled rate without carrying any conveyed material with it through an insertion comprising a number of spaced rings b, each in the form of a frustum of a cone, so disposed that the air escaping between them has its direction of motion substantially reversed. The rings are secured to bars a. The space around the rings is divided into compartments c, d, e, each of which has an outlet f controlled by a valve g.
