Abstract
An oil composition consists of a major proportion of mineral oil, a proportion, up to 10 per cent by weight, of a higher fatty acid ester of a polyoxyalkylene ether of a hexitol and, optionally, minor proportions of oil detergents and/or antioxidants. The higher fatty acid esters act as corrosion inhibitors and, when the polyoxyalkylene radicles are polyoxyethylene, have the formula <FORM:0736812/III/1> wherein R represents the hydrocarbon skeleton of a hexahydric alcohol such as sorbitol, mannitol or dulcitol, R1 represents the acyl radicle of a fatty acid containing 12-18 carbon atoms, n is 6-12, x is 4-6, and the number of carbon atoms in (OR1)x is greater than 6n. Suitable higher fatty acid esters are the tetra-, penta-and hexa-laurates, palmitates, oleates and stearates of the hexa(hydroxyethyl)ether of sorbitol; the tetrato hexa-oleates and stearates of polyoxyethylated mannitol containing 10 oxyethylene groups per molecule; the penta-and hexa-oleates and stearates of polyoxyethylated sorbitol containing 12 oxyethylene groups per molecule; and the oleates of oxyethylated sorbitol containing 10-12 oxyethylene groups per molecule. Mixed esters obtained by the fatty acid esterification of mixtures of polyalkylene glycols and hydroxypolyoxyalkylene hexitols produced by the action of alkylene oxides on aqueous solutions of hexitols may also be employed. Oil detergents mentioned are sulphonates of petroleum fractions, while antioxidants mentioned are aryl or alkylaryl phosphites and organic amines. The mineral oil may be a lubricating oil, fuel oil, diesel oil, marine oil, kerosene, spindle oil or gasoline. In examples mineral lubricating-oil compositions are described which contain the tetra - stearate, tetra - oleate, tetra - wool - wax-acids - ester, penta - laurate or penta - oleate of hexa-oxyethylene sorbitol, the tetra - oleate of deca-oxyethylene sorbitol, or the tetra-oleate, penta - oleate, hexa - stearate or hexa - oleate of dodeca-oxyethylene sorbitol. In further examples light mineral transformer oil compositions are described which contain an organic amine oxidation inhibitor known under the Trade name "Ortholeum 300" and the hexaoleate of dodeca-oxyethylene sorbitol or the tetra-oleate of hexa-oxyethylene sorbitol or (for comparison purposes) sorbitan mono-oleate.
