Abstract

736,268. Deformity appliances. HALE, R. H. Sept. 22, 1953 [April 13, 1953], No. 28150/53. Class 81 (2). A cervical appliance comprises separately formed chin cup, occipital, anterior and posterior parts and separate adjustable straps for interconnecting the chin and occipital parts and the anterior and posterior parts. The chin cup 10 is connected with the occipital support part 12 by side neck straps 18 and the anterior part 14 is connected with the posterior part 16 by shoulder and underarm straps 20. Each supporting part is made of thermoplastic material, e.g. that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Plexiglas '' and is provided with a backing pad 26 of foam rubber which extends beyond the edges of the thermoplastic. The interconnecting straps 18, 20 are made of washable webbing, the underarm portions being fitted with a flat rubber tubular section 20<1>. The straps 18, 20 are detachably secured to the supporting parts 10, 12, 14 and 16 by press studs 30 and buckles 36 are provided for adjustment purposes. Tension rod assemblies 22 are provided between the occipital part 12 and the posterior part 16 and between the chin cup 10 and the anterior part 14. Each assembly 22 comprises a metal rod 40 secured at one end, as by rivets, to the chin cup 10 or the occipital part 12 and having at the other end 42 a screw-thread on which a nut 44 is mounted. The screw-threaded end 42 slides within the upper end of a tube 46 secured to the anterior part 14 or the posterior part 16. Each nut 44 abuts against a tube 46 and is used to adjust the effective length of a tension rod assembly 22.
