Abstract

1,190,649. Surgical devices. H. O. HAMILTON. 8 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 50691/ 67. Heading A5R. A device for exercising the pubococcygeal muscle comprises an elongate body 10 defined by at least a pair of body portions 14, 15 which are fixed relative to each other at one of their ends and are in spaced relation to each other at their other end, the portions being constructed from an inherently resilient material, the device including a spacing member slidably positionable between the body portions for variably adjusting the spacing therebetween. As illustrated in Figure 2, the device 10 comprises a generally cylindrical tapered body 11 formed from two U-section body portions 14 and IS which are secured to each other at one end 17 of the body by elastic or metallic bands 18 and 20 and which are maintained in an adjustable spaced relationship at the other end 16 of the body by adjusting means 12 in the form of a movable flat member of rubber or plastics material on one surface of which are grooves defined by longitudinally extending ribs and on the other surface of which is a longitudinally extending rib adapted to lie wholly within the body portions. Each body portion is formed with cylindrical protuberances 21, the protuberance nearest the one end 17 of each body portion being apertured to receive a strand 13 of flexible material which connects the adjusting means to the body portions. The body portions may be of a resilient plastics material. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 5, not shown), the movable member is formed on the end of a rod (49) fitted; within the body of the device and having an exposed end portion provided with indicia for indicating the spacing of the body portions. A further embodiment (Figure 7, not shown) is provided with an adjustable stop (65) to limit the insertion of the device into the body of a user. The body portions are integral at one end of the device. If desired, the adjusting means may be omitted, the stop means also providing the means for adjustably spacing the body portions.
