Abstract

1,261,540. Device for treating the human spine. S. KAWADA. 31 Dec., 1968 [25 March, 1968], No. 61935/68. Heading A5R. A vibratory device for treating the human spine comprises a casing consisting of a support member 3 resiliently connected to a cover member 1 on which is mounted a pair of longitudinally extending laterally spaced parallel strip members 2, and an electric vibration means 8 mounted on an iron plate 7 secured to the cover member 1. In an alternative embodiment the vibration means comprises an electric motor (19 Fig. 1B) with an eccentric weight (20) fitted to its output shaft. The motor (19) is connected to a transformer (18) and a variable control switch (25). The motor (19) may be secured to the cover member 1 by a spring plate (23 Fig. 6), the cover member being provided with a rubber cushion (24 Fig. 6) adjacent the weighted end of the motor (19). The strip members 2 each have two rows of holes 9 into which resilient bulb members 10 may be fitted. The device may also include a neck massaging member (Figures 4 and 5) which comprises a body portion 14 defining two grooves 12 for engagement with the two strip members 2, a resilient rubber member 13 connected to the body portion 14 and abutting the cover member 1 in use, and four resilient bulb members 16 mounted on two supporting projections 15 on the outer surface of the body portion 14. The device may further include a resilient pad member (17 Fig. 10) inserted between the two strip members 2. The resilient connection between the cover and the support comprises a plurality of projections 4, 5 connected by rubber inserts 6. The projections 5 of the support member 3 are hollow and have rubber members (21 Fig. 3) extending a short distance beyond the outer surface of the member 3 to prevent slipping.
