Abstract

1343850 Orthopaedic devices O THUM 14 June 1971 27813/71 Heading A5R Orthopaedic apparatus, especially for children suffering from hip bone dislocation, comprises a thigh spreading device including a supporting member 1 for attachment to the body, at least one means pivotally mounted on the supporting member 1 for supportng the thigh or thighs of the patient in a position substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body resilient rotation producing means 11, 11' for pivoting the at least one thigh supporting means into a position spread away from the plane of symmetry of the patients body, and means affixed to the supporting member 1 and thigh supporting means, for fastening the supporting member and thigh supporting means to the body and thighs respectively. The supporting member 1 is provided on its inner surface with foam rubber 2 and is secured to the body of the patient by means of a belt 3. Holders 4 are mounted on the member 1 to support pivotable strap rods 7, 7' which carry thigh support members 8 and 8' respectively. The members 8 and 8' are padded with foam rubber and are provided with fastening belts 9 and 9'. Flexible rubber belts 11, 11' mounted at one end on the members 8 and 8' respectively, and fastened at their other ends to the outside surface of the support member 1, hold the members 8 and 8' in a spread-apart position during use. In an alternative embodiment Figure 3 (not shown), the rubber belts 11, 11' are replaced by a spiral spring, the tension of the spring being adjustable to vary the spreading force of the strap rods.
