Abstract

An aqueous solution of dicyandiamide formaldehyde and a surface active salt of a sulphonic acid is heated at a pH, which at least in the final stages must exceed 7, until a condensation product is produced which is soluble on infinite dilution but is precipitatable on acidification, particularly with aluminium sulphate. Suitable sulphonates are the sodium, potassium and ammonium salts of naphthalene sulphonic acid, phenol sulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, dihydroxydiphenyl propane disulphonic acid or the condensation product of naphthalene sulphonic acid and formaldehyde. In the examples: (1) 1 mol. dicyandiamide and 4 of formaldehyde buffered with borax to a pH above 7 were heated at 95 DEG C. until an insoluble resin was produced. Sodium dinaphthylmethane disulphonate was then added and heating continued at a pH above 7 until the resin dissolved; (2) sodium dihydroxydiphenylpropane disulphonate was the surface-active agent used. Products may be dried to form soluble powders. The solutions of the resins are precipitatable on acidification, e.g. with sulphuric, formic, acetic or hydrochloric acid or aluminium sulphate.
