Abstract

In preheating and compressing light ferrous scrap metal, especially for use in electric melting furnaces, the scrap is heated by combustion heat in a drop-bottom charging bucket (see Group XII) to the recalescence point (approximately 1450 DEG F.), compressed by a heavy weight, and then charged by gravity into the electric melting furnace. The preliminary heating drives off volatile matter, e.g. oil, and residual metals, e.g. lead, zinc and arsenic, considerably lessens the yield point, and practically eliminates the magnetic properties of the scrap with advantage in electric arc melting.
