Abstract

A sprayable coating composition comprises one or more vinyl copolymers, or a chlorinated vinyl chloride polymer dissolved in a volatile solvent mixture consisting of a major proportion of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a minor proportion of a volatile ketone or ester. The compositions may also include non-polymeric and/or polymeric plasticizers, plasticizer extenders, e.g. chlorinated diphenyl, stabilizers, and an adhesion promoting agent, e.g. a vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride/maleic acid terpolymer. Solvents mentioned are toluene, acetone, and methyl acetate. The copolymer may be derived from vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. Polymeric plasticizers specified are polypropylene adipate, polypropylene sebacate and polyvinyl ethyl ether. Non-polymeric plasticizers specified are dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, and butyl acetyl ricinoleate. The stabilizer may be dibutyl tin di-laurate or an inorganic strontium salt. The compositions are used for packaging, e.g. aircraft, and the films remaining after the solvent has evaporated are strippable. The films may be overcoated with a bitumen and/or aluminium pigmented bitumen coating.
