Abstract

1342313 Coating wood with polymer compositions PROGIL 3 June 1971 [24 June 1970 I July 1970] 18908/71 Heading C3P Wood is coated with a synthetic addition polymer latex composition which contains an organic solvent in an amount between 10 and 80% by weight based on the solids content of the latex. Polymers specified are vinyl polymers, modified or unmodified styrene/butadiene copolymers, acrylic polymers, vinyl/acrylic copolymers, vinyl/dioctyl maleate copolymers and vinyl/dibutyl maleate copolymers. Examples of suitable organic solvents are aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, esters and ketones, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, a chlorobenzene, a C 1-7 acetic-, propionic-, or butyric acid ester, methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone. The latex may also contain one or more fillers, pigments, drying agents or dyestuffs. A biocide such as a chlorophenol or organo-tin fungicide or hexachlorocyclohexane or dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane as an insecticide may also be present. In the examples vinyl acetate/dioctyl maleate copolymer latices are mixed with xylene, ethyl acetate or methyl ethyl ketone and coated on to pine and niangon wood.
