Abstract

A non-stressed dimensionally stable tape is formed from a plastic composition comprising 35-70, preferably 40-45, per cent. by weight of copolymerized vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, which copolymer includes over 90 per cent., preferably over 94 per cent., of vinyl chloride, and at least 4 per cent. of vinyl acetate, 30-65 preferably 55-60, per cent. by weight of a non-volatile plasticizer, and 1-5 per cent. by weight, based on the weight of the unplasticized copolymer, of a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride resins. The plasticizer may be dioctyl phthalate or sebacate, trioctyl phosphate, dioctylthiodibutyrate, dibutoxy ethyl thiodiglycolate, or a mixture of dioctyl phthalate and trioctyl phosphate. The stabilizer may be calcium or magnesium oxide or carbonate, dibutyl tin malate, acetate or laurate, dibutyl diphenyl tin, tetrabutyl tin, strontium acetate, lead carbonate or lead acetate. A pigment, such as lamp black, may be incorporated. The tape may be made by dissolving the composition in a volatile solvent such as cyclohexanone or methyl ethyl ketone, pouring the solution on to a casting surface and evaporating the solvent, the resultant sheet being then cut into strips.
