Abstract

A plastisol comprises a mixture of a finely-divided vinyl chloride polymer of M.W. above 20,000 dispersed in a liquid containing a liquid ester plasticizer and a petroleum extract obtained by extracting petroleum with a non-reactive polar solvent, e.g. an Edeleanu extract, the ester and extract both boiling above 125 DEG C. at 1 millimetre of mercury pressure and the extract constituting at least 20 per cent of the liquid. The polymer may be gamma or delta polyvinyl chloride, or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinyl propionate, vinylidene chloride, methyl vinyl ether, acrylonitrile or methyl acrylate. Specified plasticizers are the dibutyl, di-sec.-butyl, diamyl, dioctyl, di-(2-ethylhexyl), dibenzyl, diallyl, dimethallyl, dicyclohexyl, dicyclopentyl and dibutyl carbitol esters of phthalic acid, dibutyl sebacate, dibenzyl sebacate, dioctyl fumarate, dioctyl maleate, butyl acetyl-ricinoleate, triethylene glycol dioctanoate, tritoleyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, tributoxy ethyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, and polydiethylene glycol sebacate. The plastisols may contain pigments e.g. titanium dioxide, lead titanate and lead carbonate, dyes, e.g. anthroquinone and indanthrene blues, yellow and orange, phthalocyanine blues and greens, and cadmium and lithol reds, fillers, and heat stabilizers. The plastisols are used for coating surfaces, e.g. steel plates, and the coating gelled and hardened by heat. The plastisols may also be made into self-supporting films.
