Abstract
Plasticized polyvinyl chloride compositions containing in intimate admixture therewith means for stabilising said resinous material comprise, by weight of the resin, (1) 0,01 to 3% of either an alkali metal derivative of saccharin or a metal salt of formula RSO3M wherein M is sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium or zinc and R is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, aralkenyl, alkaryl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, aroxy, cycloalkoxy, alkaroxy, aralkoxy or alkenoxy; (2) 0,01 to 0,5% of calcium calculated as metal and included as a calcium salt of a C6-C30 carboxylic acid or calcium phenate; (3) 0,01 to 0,5% of zinc calculated as metal and included as a zinc salt of a C6-C30 carboxylic acid; and (4) 0,005 to 0,5% by weight of phosphorus calculated as element and included as a phosphite ester. Where the polyvinyl chloride has been prepared by emulsion polymerization component (1) may be derived partly or wholly from emulsifier residues. Many suitable compounds for use in the stabilizers of the invention are listed and examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, epoxidized soya bean oil and optionally titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate stabilized with (3, 4, 6 and 7) calcium and zinc naphthenates and triphenyl phosphite, together with (9 and 11) sodium lauryl sulphate; (15 and 18) calcium and zinc octoates and triphenyl phosphite with (12) sodium lauryl sulphate; (13) calcium and zinc naphthenates, diphenyl monoisooctyl phosphite and sodium lauryl sulphate; (14) calcium butyl benzoate, zinc octoate, tri-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphite and potassium oleyl sulphonate; (16) calcium octoate, zinc naphthenate, tricresyl phosphite and sodium saccharin; and (17) calcium p-octylphenate, zinc octoate, triphenyl phosphite and sodium sulphopalmitate. The compositions may also comprise vinyl chloride copolymers, e.g. copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate and vinylidene chloride, fillers, extenders, pigments and auxiliary stabilizers and may be used in the formulation of plastisols.
