Abstract

735,695. Coating with metals. BRENNAN, R. M. Sept. 26, 1951, No. 22500/51. Class 82 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] Molten metal supplied from a constant head to a spraying nozzle 26 has its temperature controlled during its passage therethrough and the sprayed metal, e.g. aluminium, is deposited on a continuously moving band 61, e.g. of paper, metal, glass, &c. carried on rolls 63. The metal is melted within a container 12 by a high frequency induction coil 31 and passes through a gate valve 19 to a duct 17 where the molten liquid level is maintained constant by means of a float 22 controlling the gate valve. An overflow lip 69 delivers surplus metal to a tank 74 from which it is fed by a pump 65 back to the container. A float 32 shuts off the supply to the nozzle when the metal level falls. A high frequency induction coil 27 surrounds the nozzle which is supplied with spraying gas from a pipe 28. The nozzle may be of elongated form with a surrounding spraying gas passage, or may comprise a number of laterally-spaced outlets with a gas outlet surrounding them. A conical guard prevents the entrance of air into the spray and is surrounded by an induction coil 163 which controls the spray temperature. The spraying gas temperature is controlled by a thermostat, and the apparatus may be enclosed within a pressure chamber so that the pressure on the metallic surface in the duct 17 can be varied. Metal is fed to a ladle 60 and is transferred to the container by turning a crank 62.
