Abstract
735,514. Controlling aircraft. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1953 [Feb. 21, 1952], No. 4598/52.. Class 4. A power-operated aircraft flying control has spring feel means acting on the pilot's control column, and a balancing tab on the control surface, which tab is operated by a motor controlled by means operable upon the occurrence of a predetermined load on the control surface, wherein a common control device is provided for operating means for trimming out the spring feel and operating the balance tab. In the embodiment shown, the control column 1 operates a servomotor 5 which deflects a lever 8 part to the control surface 3, by moving lever 9 pivoted to lever 8 at one end, 10, and resiliently mounted by springs 13 and 14 at its other end. When the load on the control surface reaches a predetermined value, one or other of springs 13 and 14 is compressed, operating micro-switch 11 or 12. These switches control the split field electric motor 15, operating the balance tab 16, and a similar motor 30 moving the frame 21 containing the centering springs 19, 20. A pilot's switch 18 may be included in the circuit to operate the device at will. Thus the centering spring feel always reproduces the load on the control surface. In power operated systems where a direct mechanical connection is used in case of power failure, the direct connection may be engaged at any time without preliminary trimming. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 572,494.
