572,494. Controlling aircraft. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Feb. 5, 1944, No. 2146. [Class 4] Means for controlling a trimming or balancing tab comprises an electric motor for moving the tab to balance the aerodynamic load on the control surface, and an electric switch for controlling energization of the motor, arranged in the operative connection between the pilot's control member and the control surface so as to be operated against the action of a spring to energize the motor when the load transmitted by the operative connection exceeds a predetermined value. The invention is shown applied to elevators 7, the tabs 2 being actuated through irreversible screw-and-nut mechanism 4 and links 5 by reversible electric motors 1 carried by arms 6 attached to the elevators, the motors acting as mass balances for the latter. The lower end of the pilot's control column 8 moves in a frame 9 against compression springs, electric micro-switches being fitted at the ends of the frame and arranged to close when the springs exert a predetermined force. A switch 13 provided on the control column enables the pilot to initiate trimming movement of the tabs whenever he so desired after closure of one of the micro-switches. With the switch 13 closed, prior to movement of the control column, actuation of the latter results in the tabs 2 functioning automatically as balance tabs when either of the micro-switches is closed. Movement of the tabs continues until the aerodynamic force on the elevators is reduced to such an extent that the load on the control column is insufficient to hold the micro-switch closed against the spring loading. The characteristics of the driving motors may be such that the operation of the tabs lags behind that necessary to give complete balance, the load on the pilot's control increasing with the rate of movement, thus giving a sense of " feel." Continuous trimming and balancing is obtained if the switch 13 is not provided.
