[Also in Group XXIX] A power operated control system for aircraft of the kind comprising a servomotor for actuating a control surface of the aircraft and a relay actuable by electrical signals transmitted thereto under the control of the pilot's control member to operate the input member of the servomotor comprises a normally inoperative mechanical linkage having at its opposite ends lost motion connections with the pilot's control member and with the input member respectively and means operating automatically, in the event of failure in the electrical system, to take up the lost motion at both ends of the linkage to permit manual operation of the input member by the linkage. As shown, the servomotor is of the kind having a fixed piston 11 and a movable cylinder 12 connected to a control surface 10 of an aircraft and is controlled by a pilot valve 13 which is operable by an electromechanical transducer 27 to which signals from a potentiometer 26 actuated by the pilot's control member 16 or from an auto-pilot and/or an autostabilizer are fed through an amplifier. A potentiometer 28 operated by movement of the cylinder 12 sends an electrical feed back signal to the amplifier. A mechanical link 19 has a lost motion connection at one end with the member 16 and at the other end with the pilot valve 13. In the event of failure of the electric supply, solenoids 24, 25 are de-energized to allow springs to operate members 22, 23 to connect the member 19 positively with the control member 16 and the valve 13 so that the pilot can operate the latter directly. Should the valve 13 stick, movement of the member 16 by the pilot will ultimately take up the lost motion with the member 19 which will then operate one of a pair of switches 30 to break the circuit to the solenoids 24, 25 and cause the locks 22, 23 to engage. Additional switches 31, 32 are so connected with the switches 30 that engagement of the locks 22,_23 does not take place should the pilot, during normal operation of the electrical system, move the control member sufficiently to displace the linkage 19 and actuate one of the switches 30. Springs 17 for centering the control column are provided.
