Abstract

735,449. Gear motors and pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 30, 1952, No. 24453/52. Class 110 (2). A hydraulic pump or motor comprises a housing 10 closely surrounding two coacting gears 18, 19 except at the zone where inlet and outlet passageways 13, 14 permit fluid flow tangentially of the gears, one of the gears being secured to a shaft 21 and the other floating freely in the housing, and fluid-pressure balancing means, which communicate with the passageways, being provided to balance the radial forces acting on the gears. In the pump shown the driving-shaft 21 is mounted in a bearing 22 of an end cover 16 and the driven gear 18 floats freely within the housing. The other end cover 15 is provided with passageways which connect a passage 25 leading from the inlet 13 to recesses 27, 29, located adjacent the teeth of the gears 18, 19, respectively, at points diametrically opposite the inlet. Other passageways in the cover connect a passage 30 leading from the outlet to diametrically-opposite recesses 32, 34. By these means the radial forces acting on the gears are balanced. End pressures acting on the gears are balanced by providing recesses in the cover 16 immediately opposite those in the cover 15, the pressure from each recess 27, 29, 32, 34 being transmitted through the openings between the teeth of the gears to the corresponding recess in the cover 16. The end thrusts are further balanced by forming circular pockets in the covers at the two ends of each gear, these being placed in communication with each other by axially extending. passageways 36, 38.
