735,282. Variable-speed gearing. FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J. Feb. 7, 1952 [Nov. 7, 1950], No. 27144/50. Class 80 (2). Variable-speed gearing and control means comprises sets of cams 5 on a pair of shafts 6 connected by gears 7 to turn in opposite directions. Sleeves 30 free on a spindle 3 have arms 4 engageable by the cams 5 and arms 2 engaging gear selector forks 1. A gear selector lever 9, which may be duplicated as shown, is pivoted to a housing 15 fixed to a rocker shaft 17 and engages a collar 12 on a shaft 6. In the neutral position shown the lever 9 may be moved to rock the shaft 17 so that a gear 18 on the shaft 17 engages a gear 7 to rotate the cams 5 and move the selector forks 1 to the neutral position. In four other positions of the lever 9, corresponding to four gear ratios, a locking pin 19 prevents rocking of the shaft 17 and the cam shafts 6 take up four different axial positions. A spring-pressed ball 14 engages one of five notches 13 in a shaft 6. The gear preselected is engaged by turning a gear change lever 8 which has a dog clutch connection to a sleeve 25 on a shaft 6. When the lever 8 has completed its movement cams on a fixed plate 33 disengage the dog clutch and the cams 5 are turned clear of the arms 4 by spring means attached to the bush carrying the ball catch 14. Thus another gear ratio may be preselected. An indicator 26 which.shows the gear ratio engaged is actuated by links 27, 28 connected to arms 29 on the sleeves 30. The gear change lever 8 may be actuated manually, mechanically, pneumatically or hydraulically, and may be coupled to the engine main clutch operating gear.
