Abstract
734,851. Gyroscopic apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BRIDEN, H. July 31, 1953 .[July 31, 1952], No. 19456/62. Class 97 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a gyroscope mounting comprising a gimbal ring 13 and pairs of bearings 14, 16, each bearing 14 comprises a tubular part 22 rigidly connected to the gyroscope structure 12, a tubular part 21 rigidly connected to the gimbal ring 13, and a sleeve 24 which is rotatably mounted with respect to the tubular parts 21 and 22 by ball bearings 25, 27. The sleeves 24 are adapted to be driven at the same speed in opposite directions through gearing 29, 31. The bearings 16 which support the gimbal ring 13 are of similar construction. In order to precess the gyroscope each bearing is provided with a slip clutch, one side of which is rigidly connected to the intermediate sleeve 24 while the other side is connected through a spring to the tubular part 21 of the bearing. When the clutch is engaged the deflection of the spring may be measured by an associated potentiometer and utilized as a measure of the out-of-balance couple which is applied to the structure 12 and which Causes the gyroscope to process.
